Collector Car Insurance

Article by Steve Benedict

If you don’t know the difference between vintage cars, antique cars, classic cars and other types of valuable older automobiles and trucks, you may end up paying too much for collector car insurance. In this article, I’ll try to help you through some of the subtle variations and how to classify your collector car for insurance purposes.

Antique Cars

The history of the automobile dates back to the 1880′s, when they were called Horseless Carriages. Many experts use the period from the 1880′s to about 1916 to date the Horseless Carriage era. When you talk to ten experts, you’ll probably get five to agree upon definitive dates for antique cars. That’s why antique car insurance is difficult. I tend to believe that antique cars were built before the first World War.

Vintage Cars

Most experts will agree that vintage cars were built between 1919-1930. I know what you’re thinking. What about those cars manufactured “during” WW1? How do you classify them? History will show that American auto plants were shuttered during the war and turned into production facilities for war vehicles. That’s where we get Vintage Cars, for purposes of classifying vintage car insurance.

Classic Cars

Some car buffs believe Classic Cars are state of the art automobiles born between 1925-1948. Others believe that any car that was built before 1973 is a Classic Car. There are as many definitions as there are “experts”. I believe The Classic Car Club of America states that an Antique Car is one manufactured before 1948.

Terminology

The purpose of all the preceding terminology is to show you how confusing it gets when trying to buy Collector Car Insurance. Your true antique car may be worth millions, is probably stored in a secure building and is never driven.

A restored vintage car may just be driven a few times a year to car shows and parades. A classic car may be the one you drive every day, because you love the look and it’s easy to work on.

Insurance

With all the experts tossing around confusing dates and terminology, your best bet for collector car insurance is to contact an independent insurance agent, that works with specialty insurers. Describe the year, make, model, your total investment, where it’s stored and the way you use your old car. Take pictures of the car, inside and out and of the storage facility. Try to find copies of all records, including original bill of sale and all restoration bills.

I believe that an independent insurance agent will find a good specialty insurer that works with collector car insurance all the time. These specialty insurance companies take all the information from your independent agent. They have their own determination of what constitutes an antique car, vintage car or classic car insurance, based on their own expert’s advice. At the end of the day, it’s the specialty insurer that will determine how much you pay for collector car insurance.

Antique Collector Car Insurance Rate

An antique collector car is what is commonly used to describe that special category of cars which have lived through generations and have survived eons of competition from more modern brands, and still maintain the integrity of having been an automobile of a time best preserved in museums and told in old folk tales of nostalgia. They best capture the meaning of the adage “old is gold” because to find a well maintained machine of that sort would be a magnificent feat indeed.

Insuring these pieces of treasure would therefore require the use of specialty insurance packages that offer clients an antique collector car insurance rate suitable for the protection of the value of the antique car should a pre – specified event occur. There have always been debates as to what kind of car qualifies for the esteemed title that is antique, but the dominant theory is that an antique car has to be at least 30 years old

This fact alone invalidates the use of regular car insurance packages which cover cars with the normal life of between 10 to 15 years. The rarity of the antique car has forced insurers the world over to come up with policies which accommodate the uniqueness of antique cars and so offer an antique collector car insurance rate specific to individual cars. The adopted method for coming up with an agreeable rate will involve the full appraisal of an antique car by a professional valuer in the employ of the insurance company.

Another way of calculating the antique car’s value is to simply use its original cash price at which it was bought. Normally in such  cases documentary proof will be required. The importance of getting the correct value of the antique car will be witnessed when it comes to calculating a suitable antique collector car insurance rate which will determine how the insurance premiums will be paid.

It is important  for you to perform due diligence as far as comparing the insurance policies that offer an antique collector car insurance rate different from each other so that you may get a cover that is relevant for protecting the value of the antique. By and large the antique collector car insurance rate will depend on the kind of cover you decide to take. In this regard, there are several options including cash value, agreed value and stated value insurance.

Cash value insurance is designed to give the value of the antique car at the time of the policy issue. It has a flaw of not being flexible enough to make room for appreciation of car value and so many have been known to avoid this type of insurance. The agreed value policy can be applied to those clients who only use their cars on special occasions and times and so can get out of paying premiums for the full coverage of the car at all times. The stated value provides cover for the stated amount of the car in the full duration of the policy.

The space provided in the trunk is 5.3 cubic feet. However, the lowered body and back tires are not devised for use during muddy or snowy seasons.

This retro inspired modern car is more rapid and more responsive than it has ever been. Available for about ,000, it is well furnished in both convertible and coupe designs.

Fanatics can choose between automatic and manual transmission engines. Tires are trendier at 18 inches. Since Ford Mustang has been introduced in 1964, the name Ford Mustang has competed with Firebird, Camaro, Barracuda, etc for more than 40 years, and is standing by its name.

The approach is over-sensitive, sophisticated, dominant and unique with attractive interiors and a hardtop convertible that can go in and out in just thirty seconds. Find Collectors Car Insurance

Article by Jeremiah William

Collectibe cars can serve as a wondrous treasure, but also as a good investment. As with any investment, an adequate protection in the form of collector car insurance is necessary. Since the repair and replacemnt of a collectible car can be cost prohibitive, a collector car insurance policy will financially save you in the event you fall victim to theft, an accident or damage.Collector car insurance is a specific and specialized form of insurance that is quite different from your regular vehicle insurance policy. As such an insurance carrier has certain provisions that must be met prior to issuing a policy. The most important requirements are the drivers age and qualifications, the age of the car, and mileage limitations. Additionally, an insurer will insist the vehicle be secured in a garage when it is not in use.In most cases, the insurer will not permit more than 5,000 miles per year, although some companies may offer an excess mileage addendum. The mileage driven is limited to car, hobby, and show activities for the most part; collector car insurance policies do not permit driving the insured vehicle for commuting or commercial activities.Another restriction on collector car insurance is the age of the car. The majority of companies require the car to be at least 15 years old. A few insurers define a collectible car as being more than 25 years old and in rare circumstances as much as 35 years. In order to qualify for collector car insurance, a driver must meet certain qualifications as well. A large majority of companies set a minimum driver age at 25 with minimum driving experience of 9 years or more.Once you meet the stipulations for your collector car insurance, you and the insurers agent will negotiate the car’s agreed upon value. Unlike a regular car which has its value set by automobile industry standard practices such as a blue book value or fair market value, you are permitted to determine the value of the car at the time of the writing of the policy. Whatever amount you and the agent agree to is the amount that will be paid to you in the event the car is a total loss due to an accident or theft.Selecting a well qualified insurance company for your collector car insurance is a necessity to protect your investment.
